Ziguzajg - More than just entertainment for children

This year’s edition of Ziguzajg boasts over 150 performances and workshops for people of all ages. This is the 7th edition of the Ziguzajg International Arts Festival. The festival was launched on Friday 17th November and closes on the 26th November.

Ziguzajg takes pride in itself for being for people rather than for profit. This is because the performances and projects are either free or cost just a measly 2 euros. This means that it is easier for parents with multiple children to take them to the theatre and to art exhibitions as it only costs a family of 5 10.

The number of attendance to this year’s festival has yet to be announced however past iterations have boasted over 16000 attendees. With 25 projects in this year’s edition there is something for everyone. Seeing as it’s an international arts festival the projects are being presented by people from 12 different countries including Malta. There are performances in English and Maltese, along with non-verbal performances.

A prominent part of the festival this year is ‘The Wishing Thread’. This is an installation found just outside parliament that is created by the children themselves. It’s just as the name says, children write down wishes and then pass them through a piece of colourful thread and tie them to a tree. It’s based on an Indian celebration called ‘Vat Purnima’. This essentially means that not only are the children making wishes they are also learning about another culture in the process as volunteers at the installation also give them a little insight into the celebration.

Even though the festival is aimed towards children and youth in order to get them to appreciate and enjoy culture even more it doesn’t mean that adults don’t enjoy themselves too. Last year the Maltese company created for Valletta 2018, Studio 18, produced the show ‘Inez Kienet Perf(etta)’ which was marketed towards both teenagers and adults alike as it dealt with issues such as the effects of social media, living in a judgemental society, and teenage disappearance.
